Plan
Your Web Site Project
How well you plan your web site project will have a tremendous
effect on how it turns out: how it will look, how well it will function,
how completely it meets your needs and expectations, and how much
it will cost.
A really great place to start when planning your project is to keep
the Five Big W's in mind: Who,
What, Where, When, and Why? Who is your target audience? What's the purpose of
your site? Where will you market
your site? When is your target deadline for having your site available publicly? Why do you need a web
site? Please view our Planning The Basics article and What Can a Well-Designed Web Site Do article to learn more.
A domain name is
the unique name that identifies a web site - it is what you see in
your browser's Address line. (ie. http://www.kestrel-designs.com/)
Selecting a domain name should reflect your company's image much the
same way your logo does - and should require the same amount of consideration
and planning.
Note: Kestrel Designs offers domain name
research and registration services. Please see our Domain Name Services
page for more information.
A Web Host is the company
that will hold your web site files and make them accessible on the
World Wide Web. Choosing the right hosting service depends on your
individual requirements. Before you sign-up for any hosting service,
make sure you can get the features you need. (Email account(s), eCommerce,
shopping cart, site search, form mail, database capability, video/audio
storage...) Also, consider how much space or bandwidth you need. TopHosts.com. is a popular place to research different hosting services.
Note: Kestrel Hosting offers hosting and
maintenance packages that have the features most small businesses
require. We can also build custom packages.
Storyboard Layout
When planning your web site, think of telling a story. What do you
want the viewer to know, feel and see, and in what order? Web site
designers use this information to create a graphic, sequential depiction
of your "story" much the way movie makers and comic book
authors do. This tool is called a storyboard.
