Searching... Searching... Searching...

Search engines help people find relevant information on the Internet. Major search engines maintain huge databases of web sites that users can search by typing in some text.

Most Popular Search Engines:  Google | Yahoo | MSN | AOL Search (Pages open in new windows)

To compile their databases, search engines rely on computer programs called "robots" or "spiders." These programs "crawl" across the web by following links from site to site and indexing or cataloging each site they visit. Each search engine uses its own set of criteria to decide what to include in its database. For example, some search engines index each page in a web site, while others index only the main page. Some look at only the content of the site, while others evaluate "Meta Tags" to complete their evaluations.

Search engines do not add all submitted URLs to their indexes, and they do not make any predictions or guarantees about when or if they will appear. Depending on factors such as the volume of submissions and evaluation of your web site, it may take several weeks or more before your submission begins to show up on search engines.

Submit Your Site

Once your site is completed and your Meta Tags are created, we recommend submitting your site to Google and the Open Directory Project at the very minimum:

Submit Your Site to Google - (Page opens in new window) Google currently has over 3 billion web pages indexed. It is used to boost the search engine returns of more than 130 partners world-wide including Yahoo, AOL Search, Earthlink and Netscape.

Open Directory Project - (Page opens in new window) The Open Directory Project describes itself as "something akin to a huge reference library... a directory that is hierarchically arranged by subject – from broad to specific." Partner sites which use the Open Directory data include AOL Search, DirectHit, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search, etc.

Kestrel Designs offers meta tag creation, search engine optimization and basic site submission services to over 30 major search engines. (Or more upon request.)
